Philippine Languages

Lemme just get some things off my chest…

Filipinos are what you call to the citizens of the Philippines. Let me point out that there are only two alternative spellings for it, and that is: Filipino and Pilipino. Not Philippino. Not Filippino. And definitely not Phillipino! And I also have to correct that the adjective used is "Philippine" and not "Filipino". Like, Philippine foods, Philippine products; NOT "Filipino food" or "Filipino products". Many use the wrong adjective and even Filipinos themselves!

Official name: Republika ng Pilipinas * Republic of the Philippines

There are 7, 107 islands in the Philippines. It is divided into 3 major parts: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Visayan is what the dialects are called in the Visayas. Cebu is in the Visayas so I speak Visayan. To be more specific, I speak Cebuano. Cebuano is the language spoken by the natives in Cebu. But not only Cebuano are spoken in the Visayas. There are also Waray, Illonggo and many more.

The national language of the Philippines is Filipino. There are around 80 distinct languages together with their respective dialects, but there should only be one national language so we may understand each other wherever we may be in our country. You must be wondering, “There are HUNDREDS of dialects in the Philippines and all of them are Filipino. Which one is which???” This is where Tagalog enters. The Tagalog language was chosen amongst all. So our national language is based in Tagalog. And it is learnt in the whole country. There’s 1 national language and 8 major languages. Cebuano is a major language. There are also some provinces there who speak Cebuano too.

That’s why for example, if ever I find myself in Mindanao... in Zamboanga del norte for example (or del sur??) I can speak in Cebuano because they understand Cebuano but I cannot understand them if they speak in their dialect, Chavacano. If I am in Manila I speak in Tagalog coz they cannot understand Cebuano. If ever if I find myself in other provinces which both parties cannot understand each other’s dialect, we both use Tagalog.... or English. Oh, we speak English. It is an official language. Foreigners will not have a problem in communication with the natives at all. You see, the people here are bilingual, others are multilingual! Spanish used to be the official language but not anymore. Only a minority speaks that language nowadays. The majority speakers are now dead to speak.

Part I - On Money

» What's in it (money) that makes us happy?
» Why is money associated with happiness?

Let's begin with the popular saying,

"Money cannot buy happiness"

-> this sentence can neither be true or false
-> this is an invalid statement
-> meaning, it doesnt make sense to me

The happiness of a person may depend on:

->one's outlook in life
->one's personal goals
->one's circumstances
->one's expectations: oneself and to others

Like if the goal of a person involves a lot of money but has only little of it, well... it affects. Money can be an obstacle.

Well, another thing, it gives satisfaction.

-Money can expand one's horizon.
Ex. It can let you travel around the world
It can buy those books you've been dying to read in the bookstore

-Money can give you peace of mind.
Ex. If you are religious, talk about Indulgences.
Charity...you know, that Money+love+then-give-it-to-the-poor thing

-Money can make things easy.
Ex. Comfort, lets you buy that comfy chair you tried in the mall.
Can hire you a maid to do your household chores
It gets you that state-of-the-art cellphone

-Money satisfies our basic needs.
Ex. Food, shelter

Before we proceed, lemme ask you a question.

We humans created "value". We put value on almost everything. Yes, it's true that everything has a value. Everything is made for a reason. The only thing is that we classify things by putting "value" into them by putting a price. We classify things as superior, average, and inferior. Anyway, who wants to be inferior? Good thing the caste system in India is gone.

So, are all things then created equal? Yes it is. It is the creation of value and pricing that started it all. Money may makes us happy but it's the source of unhappiness as well.

PART II- Forget about Money

Forget about money. It's not the question anymore. As we went through some "evolution", Money has now become a basic commodity next to clothing, food and shelter.

Like,
Without food, we die of hunger.
Without shelter, we die of cold or heat.
without clothing, we die of embarrassment! (kidding)
And if without money, we cant have anything of these, so we die!

If we cannot satisfy our basic needs, we cant be happy. Like, hello, can you propose love to someone with your stomach rumbling? Duh.

Just kidding :P (but true anyhow)

Animals are capable of love and happiness. See how they take care of their young? See how dogs wiggle their tails when they see their masters? They'r happy and they dont even have money. Our love is all they need. If we love them, we care for them. We just dont cut trees if we knew that it's the home of so many creatures, do we? Unfortunately, lol.

It is Love that kept these creatures alive.

If that is so, love is all we need. Love the only thing that makes you happy that is money-free. It is Priceless. Love makes us happy, contented. Love is the source of happiness and contentment.

There's a difference between being happy and contented.

» What is happiness?

-> Feeling or showing pleasure or contentment, fortunate. Outward manifestation is a grin, laughter, shown through strong emotions of excitement.

» What is contentment?

-> Tranquil happiness, satisfied with what one has. Outward manifestation is a smile with a peaceful look that lasts. (Tranquil -> calm, undisturbed, not agitated.)

So how do we differentiate the two?

What we seek is contentment. We can be happy anytime.
We can find happiness everywhere, but we are never contented.

If diamonds were as many as stones, would it still be THAT precious?

No, it's because we put more value on things that are rare, unique...

Diamonds are rare.
Not everyone has it.

It is human nature, the need to be Special.
It's all about Uniqueness and Individuality,
To stand out from the crowd,
To be famous, popular, known.

It can be seen through little things we do.
Like when costumize, personalize things?
The want to have that must-have-limited edition?!

» So it really is that 'common word' LOVE...that can make us content?

Of all the things that matter to us, conciously or subconciously, yes, it is LOVE. For it's the only thing that can make us feel that way. To be loved, to be be the apple of one's eye, to be wanted and special.

It is in love that makes us see ordinary things extraordinary.

"She's different from the rest that's why I love her."

We dont want commonality. We despise it.

"I thought he's different from the rest. Men! theyr are all just the same!"

So what really need that we already have is LOVE. We need love to be happy, we need love to go on with life. It is love that makes us strong, that makes us live another day. The love of life, the love of everything, the reason of our contentment. For it is who we are. We are love.

So let us be true to ourselves. Listen to our hearts.
For within can only be found our truth -
Our innermost desires.
And that is to love and be loved.

Nursery

1. A baby Mabille is highly fascinated with moving objects and loves chasing them. I suggest you buy a walking robot and expect her to walk before she turns one year.

2. She can’t talk yet and other kids are already talking. She is shy, silent and anti-social. Don’t fret. This is just a preparation for a major outburst. Brace yourself.

Elementary Life

1. Do develop STUDY HABITS in her. This will REALLY HELP in her later life, believe me. Studying with your Mabille is a must coz most of the time, she is just pretending.

2. Patiently answer all her questions. It's natural for a Mabille to ask a question and precede it with a series of Whys.

3. She loves playing doctor and nurse, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be ONE.

4. She may not have high grades in school, but don’t you ever compare her to honor kids. This tactic will never work to motivate her to "study" more. The only thing she loves in school is to play with other kids.

5. Buy her LOTS AND LOTS of books. She loves to read. Doesn’t matter what kind.

6. Her favorite subject in Grade 1 is Civics and Culture. So please do NOT scold her if her book in Civics looks like garbage.

7. Toys are the perfect gift for her. It will surely make her happy. Underwear and blouses do the opposite.

Teenage Life

Early Teens

1. NEVER EVER push clothes on her if she doesn’t want to wear it. (e.g. short skirts, spaghetti, tank tops, high heels--anything GIRLY.) She just wants to wear a big t-shirt and jeans. She is just desperately trying to deny her adolescence.

2. If she says she wants to be in the OLYMPICS, she is not joking.

3. At this age, she already knows that having a misaligned set of teeth is AESTHETICALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE. Go figure! Fast.

4. Don’t you ever freak out when your Mabille is OVERLY interested in sports like soccer, basketball, or any other sports, mind you --she is not a tomboy!! Just support her.

5. If you’re the mother. Please don’t discuss about menstruation and feminine hygiene to her in front of the rest of the family members. You have no idea how embarrassing it is to her.

6. And don’t let your Mabille overhear you and your friends comparing and talking about your daughters and sigh on how your daughter is such a freak.

7. Your daughter belongs under the sun. If she's "always" inside the house, it's still ok... but if she's inside the room with lights off? She's probably crying. She still wants to play but her playmates are "grown-up" already. Enroll her to a sports class.

8. Setting an alarm clock for her will NEVER WORK. She is still in dreamland at 5 am. To wake her, don’t just say it, or you will just be another character in her dreams. TOUCH her, grab her --shake her! And if she murmurs, she is not awake yet. Just pour cold water on her.

9. If she says she can hardly see clearly, BRING HER TO THE OPTIMETRIST RIGHT AWAY!! Her vision can still be corrected.

10. She will boast frequently on how good she is in touch ball and how she is a master in playing patintero. Just withstand her ramblings, ok. She’s just having an ego boost.

11. She will never ask for herself a bra. YOU FORCE IT ON HER YOURSELF! She's too embarrassed to ask. See? She's "got a problem" with her posture.

Late teens

1. Don’t you EVER DARE push a nursing course on her or she will hold a grudge against you for a long period of time.

2. Your daughter wants to talk about almost everything. So if she talks, and anything you hear, please, don’t use it against her.

3. She's really not absent-minded, just can’t stop thinking.

4. If she loses her appetite for days. Don’t scold her and force her to eat, just let her be. She will eventually go back to normal. She's just broken hearted.

5. She hasn’t gotten over with that Olympic dream yet.

6. Books are the best gift to her! Gee, do i still have to mention TOYS???

9. You may think that she's got nothing to do and order her to do this and that. She's got LOTS to do!! Don’t be fooled by that calm exterior. She's just trying to clear her mind off things.

10. Don’t you ever order her to do a household chore when she's studying or doing an assignment! She rarely does that at home and you interfere? If you do, most likely she will not return to what she's doing. She's gonna be stuck on that chore you've given her.

11. She's not lazy, you call her lazy and she's just living up to the name.

12. Ok, now is the time you start pushing her to wear short skirts!
